My first week at the UN has been hectic, long and extremely exciting. Speaking on behalf of Switzerland and meeting Ban Ki-moon as well as negotiating the Youth Resolution are just a few highlights!

Looking back on my first week, I can truly say, that youth delegates have their own spirit and could bring this energy to the UN. During the 2. Informal Session to negotiate the Youth Resolution the room was packed with Youth Delegates many of whom were able to speak on behalf of their nations. Switzerland brought in many proposals which made me speak a lot during the Informals and I guess the world knows now, that Switzerland is committed to negotiate a good resolution. Belgium, Norway and Austria did also exceptionally well in representing their states’ interest and being a counter-pole to more experienced senior diplomats with different goals than us. I am very confident that we can improve this resolution during the next week.

What does 1 week UN change in my view of the UN?

1) General Debate can be veeeery long.
2) Informals and corridor talks are where the policies are made.
3) Although not all delegates share the same belief, the atmosphere is always friendly, polite and welcoming.
4) Alliances, which I would never have thought to be possible, do exist and work perfectly well together!

Now, I will attend two other meetings and especially work on the 2. Draft of the Youth Resolution and the Swiss Working Breakfast to be held on Tuesday!

all the best,
olli

PS Friday is like Sunday at the UN ;-)
