9 October 2017, Giada Crivelli
This summer I received a very special request. The Universal Postal Union (UPU) contacted me and asked me to be part of the International Jury of the 46th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People. This competition, launched in 1971, invite youth from 9 to 15 years old, to write letters on a specific theme announced by the UPU. First member states select the best entry on the national level and then they send their top composition to the UPU. At this stage, an indipendent international jury choose the winners of the competion.
This year, in order to celebrate the election of the new UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, the topic of the entry was the following: “Imagine you are an advisor to the new UN Secretary-General; which world issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?” Children were encouraged to use their imagination as they write to the Secretary-General envisioning a positive change they would like to see in the world.
My task as a jury member, was to read all the winner of the national selected letters (49 Letters from 49 member states, that represent more than 1.2 Million Children) and together with the other two jury members selects the winners and and entries worthy of a special mention.
To read all these letters has been an amazing and inspiring experience. The quality of some letters were just incredibles! As Youth Representative I’m very glad about the fact that such initiatives exists and give youth the possibility to express themselves in a free and creative way. In today’s world, it is very important that young people has the possibility to express and be recognized for their ideas and for their creativity abilities.
The winner letter of this competition is written by Eva Giordano Palacios, 14 years old from Togo. Eva was invited to travel from Togo to Switzerland in order to attend the World Post Day in order to receive the price by the UPU Director General Mr. Bishar A. Hussein for her amazing entry.
